Foreign Minister meets with new Canadian Ambassador to Latvia
On 30 January, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Ambassador of Canada to Latvia John Morrison, who had arrived on an accreditation visit.
The parties recognized the need to dynamise economic relations and commercial contacts. The Canadian Ambassador agreed with the Foreign Minister that concluding a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada could also have a positive impact on bilateral trade.
During the meeting the parties accentuated the importance of cooperation within NATO, especially in relation with the Chicago Summit in May this year, as well as joint efforts of Canada and Latvia in stabilizing Afghanistan.
The Foreign Minister also expressed an invitation to Canadian officials to visit Latvia, thus reinforcing and expanding relations between both countries.
H.E. Ambassador Morrison started his career with the Department of External Relations and International Trade of Canada in 1985 and has worked in the Canadian Trade Office in Taiwan and in embassies in Japan, China, Russia and Malaysia. He has served as Ambassador to Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro.
