Secretary of State meets Chilean Ambassador on farewell visit

01 Feb 2012

On 1 February, Secretary of State Andris Teikmanis met with the Ambassador of Chile to Latvia Jose Cruz as part of the Ambassador’s farewell visits. The parties recognised the successful development of political and economic relations, characterised by the meeting of the presidents of both states during the European Union – Latin America and Caribbean Summit in 2006, and also by the foreign ministers’ meeting within the framework of the UN General Assembly in 2010. The Secretary of State noted that economic cooperation had considerably increased: Chile is the third major trade partner for Latvia in South America, after Brazil and Argentina.  Given that the Chilean side has been presented with the draft Convention on the Avoidance of Double Taxation, experts from both countries continue working on the elaboration of the Convention.

The Secretary of State and the Chilean Ambassador reviewed the agenda of the upcoming 7th European Union – Latin America and Caribbean Summit to be held in January 2013 in Santiago, Chile. The parties also appreciated Chile’s role in facilitating stability in the South American region, as well as strengthening partnership with the European Union under the Association Agreement.

As from 24 February 2009, H.E. Jose Kruz was the Ambassador of Chile to Latvia resident in Sweden.
