Cabinet approves Development Cooperation Policy Plan for 2012

17 Apr 2012

On 17 April, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Development Cooperation Policy Plan for 2012, produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The amount allocated for the implementation of the plan and carrying out bilateral development cooperation is LVL 50,269.

In view of the limited funding, only one beneficiary, Moldova, has been singled out as a priority country for 2012. With the co-financing of LVL 27,000 and the expertise of the Ministry of Justice, Latvia will take part in a joint four-year project implemented by the USAID in the judicial sector of Moldova. Further LVL 3,000 will be invested in a joint programming project for the new European Union donor countries in the area of regional development of Moldova. The project will be implemented in association with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development.

The plan also allocates LVL 15,269 in co-financing to non-governmental organisations and social partners which have received funding from international donors, including the European Commission, for carrying out development cooperation and education cooperation projects. The decision to grant co-financing will be taken by the Advisory Council on Development Cooperation Policy Matters, which includes representatives from all government institutions, NGOs and social partners.

Within the framework of the plan, the Foreign Ministry intends to support with LVL 5000 the implementation of a civilian project in Afghanistan, in the place where the contingent of the National Armed Forces of Latvia and representatives from the State Police and State Border Guard are located.
