On 4 March, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Latvia, Detlef Weigel, as part of his farewell visits. During the meeting, the parties noted with gratification the Latvian-German bilateral relations to date, and indicated that the close political dialogue and economic co-operation should be continued at a dynamic rate. Regarding current developments in international and security policy, Mr Riekstins and Mr Weigel exchanged opinions about the meeting between French President Sarkozy and Russian President Medvedev when the sales of a Mistral class vessel to Russia were also discussed. While speaking about the economic and financial situation in the world and in the European Union, the parties turned their attention to the situation in Greece. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Ambassador thanked the Minister for his support and for successful co-operation with the Foreign Ministry. Minister Riekstins wished success to Mr Weigel on his new position at the Embassy in France and expressed hope to soon welcome the new German Ambassador to Latvia.
