Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins voices support to Turkey's EU integration
On 6 January, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Latvia, H.E. Duray Polat, to discuss bilateral co-operation between Latvia and Turkey, and the European Union agenda, including the Turkey's EU integration course. The meeting took place as part of the Ambassador's farewell visits.
During the discussion, Minister Riekstins spoke positively of the Ambassador's contribution to strengthening the dialogue between Turkey and Latvia. The minister noted that during the Ambassador's term of office, a number of cultural events as well as the exchange visits of senior officials provides a strong foundation for the enhancement of political and economic relations. In their discussion on the current European Union related topics, the parties devoted attention to the EU enlargement process and to accession of Turkey to the European Union. "Latvia supports the ongoing enlargement process and Turkey's EU integration on basis of an individual approach and the fulfillment of the membership criteria," Minister Riekstins indicated. At the same time, the minister emphasised that the unsolved bilateral issues should not be a pretext for delaying the EU accession process. Duray Polat has been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Latvia since 6 December 2006. He was the first resident Turkish Ambassador in Latvia. Earlier, the Ambassadors of Turkey residing in Vilnius were also accredited in Latvia.
