Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins to meet Turkish Ambassador on farewell visit
On 6 January, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will meet with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Latvia, H.E. Duray Polat, as part of the Ambassador's farewell visits.
During the meeting, the parties intend to discuss bilateral co-operation between Latvia and Turkey, the Turkey's EU integration course, as well as the EU enlargement process.
As the first resident ambassador of Turkey in Riga, Duray Polat has provided significant contribution to strengthening the dialogue between Turkey and Latvia. During the Ambassador's term of office, a number of significant cultural events have taken place, including the Days of Turkish Culture in Latvia and Latvia's Days of Culture in Turkey. The Ambassador has also assisted with the exchange visits of senior officials: the organization of the official visit to Latvia by the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan in February 2009, as well as the visits of the Latvian senior officials to Turkey.
Duray Polat has been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Latvia since 6 December 2006. He was the first resident Turkish Ambassador in Latvia; prior to that, the Ambassadors of Turkey residing in Vilnius were also accredited in Latvia.
