On 31 March in New York, the Ambassador of Latvia to UN, Normans Penke, took part in the International Donors' Conference Towards a New Future for Haiti organised by the UN and aimed at pledging international support to Haiti's long-term recovery after the devastating earthquake in January this year. During the event, the donors announced their decision of yielding 5.3 billion USD in assistance to Haiti. The Ambassador informed about the conceptual decision of the Latvian Government to allocate up to 150,000 EUR to rebuilding of Haiti. The assistance pledged by the donors will support the Haitian government's vision and Action Plan, the principal objective of which is transition, within the nearest 18 months, from the emergency period to the phase of renewal of the country. The funds allocated by Latvia are intended for renovating infrastructure, after the identification, together with Latvia's business community, of specific areas where Latvia's offer would be best suited to the current needs of Haiti.
