Information for travellers regarding disrupted air traffic in more than 20 European countries due to volcano in Iceland [18 Apr 2010]

Due to the volcanic ash caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland has halted air traffic in more than 20 European countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends travelers to follow information on the websites of airlines and airports, by telephoning or via e-mail. Regarding the options for rebooking or cancelling an airline ticket it is advised to contact the airline or the travel agent from which the ticket has been purchased.

What to do if stranded abroad: 

  • contact the airlines for possible rebooking, cancellation, compensations, etc.;
  • opt for alternative means of transportation (motor vehicles, rail or ferry);
  • retain payment documents for accommodation, meals, etc. to enable requesting compensation form airlines or an insurance company (if this is provided for in the conditions);
  • when in need of material assistance, please use the money transfer services by Western Union, MoneyGram, etc;
  • when in need of medical assistance, apply at the nearest medical facility, or, if required, contact the diplomatic / consular mission of Latvia;
  • if the period of validity of your visa expires, please contact the airlines;
  • in case of a stolen/lost passport, please contact the nearest diplomatic / consular mission of Latvia.
