Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins with Foreign Minister of Montenegro discuss Montenegro's Euroatlantic integration
On September 22, during the 64th session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins met with the Foreign Minister of Montenegro, Milan Rocen. The meeting took place on the initiative of the Montenegrin side. The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral relations between the countries, the possibilities for expanding their political dialogue and facilitating exchange visits by officials of both countries. One of the principal topics of the dialogue was Montenegro's integration into the European Union and NATO. "Latvia is ready to share its reform experience with Montenegro and to develop the mechanism for political consultations on the EU related issues between the foreign ministries of both countries," the Foreign Minister of Latvia emphasized. Minister Riekstins expressed support by Latvia to the EU enlargement process in Southeast Europe and encouraged Montenegro to take forward the required reforms. The ministers discussed the eventual cancellation of visa requirements for Montenegrin nationals entering the Schengen area from 1 January 2010, if Montenegro meets all the relevant conditions. In view of the NATO Membership Action Plan application submitted by Montenegro in 2008, both Foreign Ministers exchanged opinions about the relations between NATO and Montenegro, as well as co-operation within the format of the Adriatic-Baltic-U.S. dialogue. The ministers also reviewed the situation in the Western Balkans region. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Milan Rocen, has held this office since 29 February 2008. (End of text)
