Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins: Support by Afghan President to second round of election is a responsible step [21 Oct 2009]

Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins welcomes as a responsible step the decision by the current President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, to support the second round of presidential elections scheduled for 7 November. Foreign Minister indicates that such a decision can only add to the legitimacy of the new administration.

"While preparing for the second round of voting, particular attention should be paid to a transparent, secure and legitimate election process, which is a prerequisite to ensure the Afghan people's increasing trust in their public administration," Minister Riekstins notes. 

The independent election commission, by investigating fraud of the August 20 elections, has acted in a constructive manner. In accordance with the results of its investigation, the current President Hamid Karzai has received less than 50% of votes.
