On 3 November, President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, signed the instrument of ratification on the Treaty of Lisbon thus concluding the ratification process in the Czech Republic. President Klaus signed the document only a few hours after the Constitutional court of the Czech Republic ruled that the Treaty of Lisbon is in line with the Czech Constitution.

Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins welcomes the conclusion of the Lisbon Treaty ratification process in the Czech Republic and consequently in all 27 EU Member States. Thus, the coming into effect of the Treaty of Lisbon concludes a ten-year-long process of reforms of the EU institutions and policies. The Treaty is instrumental for an effective and concerted further functioning of the EU in the interests of its citizens, both within the union and on the international policy arena. To this end, the member states should make efforts to implement the Treaty of Lisbon and fully make use of the opportunities it provides.

The Treaty of Lisbon is currently scheduled to enter into force on 1 December 2009.
