Latvia offers rehabilitation programme for children of the Gaza sector

On 2 March Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins took part in the International Conference for the Support of the Reconstruction of Gaza.

Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins on working visit to Egypt and to participate in international conference on aid for the reconstruction of Gaza

From 1 – 3 March, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will be on a working visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, where he will meet with Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit to discuss the possibilities for the development of political dialogue with one of the most influential states in the Middle East, as well as to actuate co-operation in economics, culture, and education. During the visit it is planned to conclude an intergovernmental agreement on education and science.

Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and Egyptian Foreign Minister emphasise interest in developing business contacts between Latvian and Egyptian entrepreneurs

On 1 March, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins met with the Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Minister for International Co-operation Faiza Abou El Naga, as well as General-Secretary Amr Musa of the Arab States League. The meeting took place during the working visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt by Minister Riekstins.

Embassy of Latvia to the Arab Republic of Egypt formally opened

At the conclusion of his visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins formally opened the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Cairo, which has been operating since early 2007. In mid 2008 the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia, Maris Selga, presented his credentials, and in September 2008 he was also installed as Ambassador to the League of Arab States.

Maris Riekstins to participate at informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels

On 5 March, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins will participate at an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels. The meeting of foreign ministers will be devoted to preparations for the forthcoming 60th birthday Summit Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government in Strasbourg, France and Kehl, Germany from 3-4 April 2009.

Maris Riekstins: Investment by the international community to improve the security situation in Afghanistan crucial in run-up to presidential elections

On 5 March, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins took part in the meeting of NATO foreign ministers at NATO headquarters in Brussels. At the meeting the major focus was on preparations for the forthcoming summit of NATO Heads of State and Government, the situation in Afghanistan, and NATO – Russia relations. Within the framework of the meeting, the NATO - Georgia and NATO - Ukraine commissions also held talks.

Foreign Ministry Director of Bilateral Relations Ambassador Eduards Stiprais meets with Ambassador Rasoul Eslami of the Islamic Republic of Iran

On 9 March, the Director of the Foreign Ministry Bilateral Relations Directorate – Ambassador Eduards Stiprais, met with Ambassador Rasoul Eslami of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is on an accreditation visit to Latvia from 9 – 10 March.

Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and Ambassador of Kazakhstan highlight potential economic co-operation

On 10 March Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins met with Galymshan Koishybayev, the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who was on his accreditation visit to Latvia.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites media representatives to obtain accreditation for Adriatic-Baltic-Atlantic meeting

On 23-24 March in Riga, at the initiative of Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins, there will be an Adriatic state, Baltic state and Atlantic meeting. The meeting will bring together foreign ministers from Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Montenegro. The U.S. administration also will be represented.

Maris Riekstins expresses deepest sympathy with regard to tragic shooting

On 11 March, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins sent a letter of condolences to Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German Minister for Foreign Affairs, with regard to the tragic shooting incident at the Albertville secondary school in Winnenden, north of Stuttgart. It is believed that at least ten people have lost their lives and many more are injured.
