Ambassador of Latvia to Bosnia and Herzegovina submits letter of accreditation

11 Jun 2009

On 11 June, Juris Poikans, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented his letter of accreditation to the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nebojsa Radmanovic.

In his address, Ambassador Poikans expressed his determination to strengthen the relations between Latvia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, also acknowledging the need to develop the legal framework of bilateral agreements, to strengthen economic co-operation and contacts within international organisations.

The Ambassador noted that Latvia has expressed – both on bilateral basis and during the Adriatic-Baltic-Atlantic meeting in March in Riga, also attended by Sven Alkalaj, Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina – its unequivocal support to Bosnia and Herzegovina's NATO aspirations. Latvia will continue to share with Bosnian and Herzegovinian colleagues its experience in the course towards the North Atlantic Alliance.

Ambassador Poikans congratulated Bosnia and Herzegovina on the signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU and confirmed that in the near future the Agreement will be ratified by the Saeima. He also expressed support to Bosnia's efforts towards visa liberalisation with the European Union.

Mr. Poikans also noted that the city of Sarajevo has a special significance for the history of Latvian sports, as 25 years ago Zintis Ekmanis, a Latvian bobsledder, won a bronze medal in Sarajevo during the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.

Ambassador Juris Poikans resides in Slovenia, Ljubljana.
