Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins to meet with new U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Judith Garber
On 24 August, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will meet the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Judith Gail Garber, in order to receive copies of her letters of credence signed by the U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Judith Garber will be the seventh resident Ambassador of the USA to Latvia since the restoration of independence. In 1984, Ms Garber started her career at the U.S. Department of State; she has been a diplomat at the U.S. embassies in Spain, Israel, Mexico and the Czech Republic. From 2007, Judith Garber occupied the position of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
On 25 June 2009, the U.S. President Barack Obama nominated Judith Garber Ambassador to Latvia. On 7 August, her appointment was approved by the U.S. Senate and, on 14 August, Judith Garber took her ambassador's oath at the Department of State.
On 25 August, following the presentation of her letters of credence to President Valdis Zatlers at the Riga Castle, Judith Garber will officially take up the position as the U.S. Ambassador to Latvia.
