Latvia approves of presidential and provincial election process in Afghanistan
The Foreign Ministry of Latvia congratulates Afghanistan on the holding, on 20 August, of Afghanistan's presidential and provincial council elections. In the history of the country, these are the second presidential elections held under a democratic constitution.
The Afghan electors' activity in the face of security threats deserves praise. Whether or not the presidential elections will require a second round, the voting on 20 August has a vital significance in securing legitimacy of the public administration and future development of the country.
The Foreign Ministry of Latvia encourages Afghanistan to proceed with the initiated reforms and the strengthening of democracy. Latvia has until now actively supported Afghanistan's development and renewal by providing both military and civilian assistance. Also in future, this goal will remain one of Latvia's priorities in shaping its relations with Afghanistan.
In the European Union Election Observation Mission in Afghanistan, Latvia is represented by one long term observer.
