Latvian Ambassador to Mexico presents credentials

08 May 2008

On 8 May the Latvian Ambassador to the U.S., Andrejs Pildegovics, presents his letter of credence to President Felipe Calderon of the United Mexican States, thus taking up office as the fourth non-resident Latvian Ambassador to Mexico.

Over the last years in particular, relations between Latvia and Mexico have diversified and intensified in trade, culture, and education, and also in the area of co-operation within international organisations.

In 2005 the Mexico-founded construction material manufacturer Cemex became the owner of a cement works in Broceni, with plans to enlarge the plant significantly. Mexico is the only country in Latin America with which Latvia has established a co-operation format of a joint committee in culture, education, and sport. A convention for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion between both states is being prepared. Political consultations between Latvian and Mexican foreign ministries are held on a regular basis.

President Felipe Calderon of the United Mexican States has been invited to visit Latvia.
