Cabinet of Ministers endorses national report on UN Elimination of Racial Discrimination Convention
On 14 July the Cabinet of Ministers endorsed a national report on Latvia's adherence to the UN International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination of 21 December 1965 (hereinafter – Convention). The report covers the period from 2003 to 2007.
In accordance with the Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 984 "On the working group for the preparation of a national report on the adherence in the Republic of Latvia to the Convention on the elimination of racial discrimination" a working group was created for the said purpose. The working group comprised representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, of the Interior, Education and Science, Culture, Welfare, Justice and Health, as well as from the Secretariat of the the Special Assignment Minister for Social Integration, National Radio and Television Council and the Prosecutor General Office. This sixth report on adherence to the Convention prepared by the working group covers the period up until 2007, as well as the work achieved so far by the UN Racial Discrimination Committee in the realisation of the suggestions and recommendatons adopted on 23 August 2003. The report was also sent to the Office of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia, the Latvian Centre for Human Rights, Centre for Public Policy Providus, the Human Rights Institute of the University of Latvia, Civic Alliance-Latvia and the Latvian Red Cross for comment.
After endorsement by the Cabinet of Ministers, the report will be translated and submitted to the UN. The text of the report in the Latvian language is available on the Cabinet of Ministers home page www.mk.gov.lv.
