Latvian Foreign Minister expresses condolence for the tragic loss of the former Polish Foreign Minister

The Latvian foreign minister has sent a message of condolence to his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski, expressing his deepest sympathy for the loss of former Polish foreign minister and member of the European Parliament, politician and historian Bronislaw Geremek.

Mr Riekstins expressed his appreciation for the much-valued contribution that Mr Geremek had made in foreign affairs, as well the successful co-operation which had evolved between Latvia and Poland, both during Mr Geremek's term of office as foreign minister and also within the framework of the European Union whilst Mr Geremek was MEP, and in other multilateral formats.

 "At this time of mourning, our thoughts are with the next of kin, friends and colleagues of the  former Polish foreign minister, long-serving politician and firm supporter of democratic ideals." the  Latvian foreign minister stated.

Bronislaw Geremek, who is considered to be one of the leaders of the Polish democratic opposition, served as foreign minister of Poland from 1997 until 2000, and had been an member of European Parliament since 2004.
