Statement by the Latvian Foreign Ministry with regard to the situation in Lebanon

28 Jan 2008

The Foreign Ministry expresses concern with regard to the escalation of violence in Lebanon, and calls upon all political powers to refrain from all actions which could aggravate the crisis and undermine the stability of the country and the security of its citizens. The Foreign Ministry supports the democratically elected Lebanese Government of Fouad Siniora.

At the same time Latvia urges the political powers of Lebanon to join forces and to complete the presidential election process as soon as possible. Latvia considers that successful presidential elections is a precondition for the resolution of Lebanon's internal policy crisis.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deepest commiserations to the families of the victims of clashes and acts of terrorism.
