Latvian Foreign Ministry marks anniversary of de iure recognition

On 25 January 2007, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorates the 87th anniversary of the international de iure recognition of the Republic of Latvia.

At 3.30 p.m., Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and former foreign ministers will open a photogallery of former foreign ministers of the Republic of Latvia, which has been moved to the Foreign Ministry's new building.

At 4 p.m., a reception is to take place in the Foreign Ministry, including the unveiling of a memorial plaque honouring the foreign service officials who suffered under Soviet and Nazi occupation. The plaque has also been moved to the Ministry's new building. At the reception, certificates of recognition from the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister will be presented to staff of the Foreign Ministry and other ministries, in acknowledgment of their contribution to the strengthening of the Republic of Latvia.

On 26 January at 11 a.m., the Foreign Minister will lay flowers in the Meza Kapi cemeteries at the last resting places of Janis Cakste, first President of the Republic of Latvia, and of Zigfrids Anna Meierovics, Latvia's first foreign minister.

On 29 January at 4 p.m., an exhibition entitled The genesis of a nation: the New Latvian movement and Krisjanis Valdemars will be opened in the ground floor foyer of the Foreign Ministry.
