Foreign Minister discusses co-operation in education with Ambassador of India

27 Feb 2008

On 27 February the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maris Riekstins, met with the Ambassador of India to Latvia, Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, and discussed current issues pertaining to Latvia and India bilateral relations.

The Minister spoke highly of the accreditation of Latvia's first non-resident Ambassador Hardijs Baumanis, which took place on 26 September last year in India, in New Delhi. During discussions Mr Riekstins advised about the readiness of the Latvian side to take part in political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of both countries, which have been anticipated for May this year.

The Foreign Minister commended the co-operation achieved so far within international organisations, and also expressed appreciation about the involvement of the Embassy of India in the organisation of Indian cultural events in Latvia. Mr Riekstins and the Ambassador of India to Latvia agreed on the necessity to develop and to strengthen co-operation in the sphere of education, including making arrangements for student exchange programmes.

Ambassador Gopalan Wadhwa noted with satisfaction that travellers from India can now receive Latvian visas from the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, which, in the opinion of the Ambassador, will foster interest about Latvia from Indian business people and tourists. During the talks the Indian Ambassador invited Foreign Minister Riekstins to visit India.
