Latvian Ambassador Astra Kurme opens Baltic and Mediterranean art exhibition in Rome

08 Feb 2008

On 8 February an exhibition of the art of the Baltic and Mediterranean regions "Sconfinamenti" was opened at the Castel Sant'Angelo exhibition hall in Rome.

Latvia is represented at the exhibition with the work of ten artists from important periods in the history of Latvian art, curated from the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Fine Art (LNMFA). From 8 February until 20 April the work of Janis Tidemanis, Janis Liepins, Romans Suta, Eduards Kalnins, Boriss Berzins, Janis Pauluks, Girts Muiznieks and Andris Vitolins will be displayed at the Castel Sant Angelo, along with selected works of art from Finland, Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia. The Castel Sant'Angelo is one of the most popular tourist sights in Rome.

The collection presented at the exhibition is also summarised in an extensive catalogue which was presented at the opening of the exhibition.

This is the second instance of cooperation between the La Sapienza University of Rome and the art events agency Meet in Art in bringing together art of the Baltics and the Mediterranean. Last year's exhibition was dedicated to parallels between 20th century art processes in Italy and Finland, presenting at a selection of respected and representative Finish art. This year the organisers, among which the LNMFA is one of the main co-operation partners, have expanded the enterprise, seeking to present a wider panorama of regional art. As mentioned by the curator of the exhibition, Sergio Rossi, future plans anticipate a more in-depth exploration of individual national art traditions. Considering this year's excellent co-operation with specialists of the Latvian National Museum of Fine Art, the possibility of holding a more extensive exhibition of Latvian art in the near future is quite feasible.

The exhibition is organised with the support of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as one of a number of public diplomacy projects.
