Project Balticness goes to Norway [05 Feb 2008]

On 7 and 8 February the travelling project Balticness organised by the Latvian Presidency of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS) will visit Oslo, Norway. The project includes an exhibition of photographs, a jazz concert and a debate on the topic of regional cooperation.

As part of the project, on 7 February a discussion will take place at the Oslo University College. The title of the round table discussion seminar is Energy and social welfare policy in the Baltic Sea region - what are the options? Main challenges and political capacity of the Baltic Sea region. .

The discussion will be attended by the Rector of the Oslo University College Sissel Østberg, the Latvian Ambassador to Norway and Iceland Māris Klišāns; the Norwegian Minister of Research and Higher Education Tora Aasland, the Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Kingdom of Norway and Iceland Percy Westerlund, Head Director of Research, Oslo University College Espen Dahl, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Oslo University College Harald Koht, Head of Research and Development of the Faculty of Engineering of the Oslo University College Knut Lehre Seip, Associate Professor of Social Sciences of the University of Latvia Andris Runcis, representative of the Public Administration Department of the Lithuanian Mykolas Romeris University Arvydas Guogis, Associate Professor of Vidzeme University Feliciana Rajevska, Senior Researcher of the Institute of Physics and Energetics Gaidis Klāvs, Head of Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation Arne Ören and Director of the Institute of Energy Systems and Environment of the Riga Technical University, Professor Dagnija Blumberga.

On 7 February an exhibition of photographs will open at the Study Centre of the University of Oslo, "where the Baltic Sea and people meet". The exhibition includes work by 40 young photographers from the Baltic Sea states. The photographers are between the ages of 18 and 30, and represent all the Baltic Sea states. The young photographers, looking at the Baltic Sea through the eyes of a photo camera, have created its mirror image and diversity, with a touch of a sense of humour, respect for the surrounding environment, energy and fulfilment of dreams. The exhibition will be open until 13 February.

On 8 February a concert by Latvian and Norwegian jazz musicians will take place at the Herr Nilsen Jazz Club. Latvia will be represented at the concert by Deniss Paškēvics and the group Riga Groove Electro, but Norway by Erling Wicklund. The concert will be complemented by a video performance about the interaction of the Baltic Sea and its people.

The Project Balticness is a year long series of events taking place in all the capitals of the CBSS states (Tallinn, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Oslo, Reykjavik, Copenhagen, Berlin, Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga). The main aim of the Project is to foster development of a sense of identity and affiliation in the region, promoting more comprehensive cooperation and closer integration among the countries of the Baltic Sea region, and highlighting the Baltic Sea as the life line of the entire region and its population.

The Project is being implemented by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs working with Latvian embassies in CBSS countries, local governments of the capitals, CBSS Secretariat in Stockholm, the Contemporary Arts Centre, Musicians Association Ze Pirats, and the Baltic Development Forum.

Representatives of the press and other interested parties are invited to take part in the events.
