Latvian Foreign Minister on official visit to Moldova

On 4-5 February, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will be on an official visit to the Republic of Moldova. During the visit, discussions will focus on the opportunities for reinforcing a multi-faceted dialogue between the parliaments, governments and sectoral ministries of both countries, as well as further development of economic co-operation, relations between the European Union and Moldova and their future prospects.

The Foreign Minister is to meet with President Vladimir Voronin of Moldova, Marina Lupa, Speaker of the Parliament, Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan, as well as with Vasile Sova, Deputy Minister for Reintegration.

Minister Riekstins will also meet with General Ferenc Banfi, Head of the EU Border Assistance Mission, and Latvian representatives in the mission, which has the aim of facilitating co-coordinated operation by Moldovan and Ukrainian governments, and to provide assistance in the areas related to the border, customs and financial issues and the supervision of these areas.  


By its involvement in the implementation of the European Neighbourhood Policy and development co-operation policy, Latvia has brought forward as one of its priorities, beside co-operation with Ukraine and Georgia, the promotion of a political and economic dialogue with Moldova, as well as support to the EU's eastern neighbours in the implementation of reforms and in their course towards Eurointegration.
