Cabinet of Ministers confirms participation of Foreign Ministry expert in EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo
On 1 April the Cabinet of Ministers approved the participation of a Foreign Ministry expert in EULEX Kosovo, the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo. The expert is Inga Sarsune, Second Secretary of the Security Policy Department at the Ministry. Her mission to Kosovo, as a Situation Centre Operations Officer, is planned to take place from 1 June 2008 to 1 July 2009.
Foreign Minister to take part in NATO summit in Bucharest
From 2 to 4 April Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will participate in the NATO Summit Meeting of Heads of State and Government, which will take place in Bucharest, Romania.

Legal framework expansion and co-operation on environmental, energy and financial issues discussed between Latvia and Russia
On 8 April 2008, the Working Group on Economic Issues of the Latvia-Russia Intergovernmental Commission convened for their second session in Riga. At the session boths sides discussed matters related to economic co-operation, including the further expansion of the legal framework for co-operation, for example the draft agreements on avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion, on the promotion and protection of investments, and on co-operation in the tourism sector.
Foreign Minister and German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs discuss regional co-operation
At their meeting on 9 April Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed satisfaction with the dynamic nature of bilateral relations between the two countries, and were of one opinion that regional co-operation should be reinforced.

Consolidated version of Lisbon Treaty available in Latvian
This week, unofficial consolidated versions of the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union together with the annexes and protocols thereto, including the amendments introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon, were published in Latvian on the Internet site of the European Council. As a result of the consolidation, amendments made by the Lisbon Treaty have been included in the EU core treaties and reflected in a single document.

On 24 April, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs starts the accreditation of media representatives for the 7th Summit of the Council of the Baltic Sea States Heads of Government, gathering together prime ministers of 11 countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden) to deliberate on the region's future and on the reform of the Council of the Baltic Sea States.

Seminar on the Treaty of Lisbon on May 7, 2008 in Riga

Latvian Foreign Minister: Latvia should increase funding for development co-operation
Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins believes that Latvia should considerably increase financial aid earmarked for development co-operation, in order to reach the level of 0.17% of the GDP by 2010, as set out in the conclusions of the General Affairs and External Relations Council. Foreign Ministry Political Director in e-PINE Washington consultations discusses current international issues
On Wednesday, 30 April, the consultations of the e-PINE (Enhanced Partnership in Northern Europe) are underway, with the participation of Foreign Ministry Political Directors from Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and the U.S.. The Latvian delegation at the consultations is being led by Peteris Ustubs, the Foreign Ministry Political Director. The U.S. is represented by Daniel Fried and Kurt Volker.
