Latvia and Uzbekistan discuss co-operation in the area of education during political consultations [05 Sep 2008]

On 4 September political consultations of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and of Uzbekistan took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. During these consultations the bilateral co-operation between Latvia and Uzbekistan, relations between the EU and Uzbekistan, issues of regional co-operation and security, as well as the forthcoming visit of the President of Latvia to countries of Central Asia in October were discussed.

The Latvian delegation was headed by Under-secretary of State Edgars Skuja. During the political consultations, meetings were also held with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov and his deputy RustamTuhtabajev.   

During the meetings the parties emphasised the importance of the anticipated visit by the President of Latvia to Uzbekistan, which will enhance bilateral co-operation in the area of economy and foster co-operation between sectors. During the meetings relations between the EU and Uzbekistan and the process of introducing EU strategy in Uzbekistan were discussed. One of the priorities of Latvia in both the bilateral co-operation and EU context is education.

During the meeting between Edgars Skuja and the Minister of Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan, E. Ganiev economic co-operation between Latvia and Uzbekistan were discussed  as well as the organisation of a business forum during the forthcoming visit of the President of Latvia.
