On 22 May, during the official visit by Igor Chudinov, Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, a meeting with Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins took place. The ministers reviewed current bilateral co-operation and the possibilities for intensification of the political and economic dialogue.
Minister Riekstins acknowledged Latvia's interest in deepening bilateral co-operation with the Kyrgyz Republic and the dialogue with Central Asian states as a whole. "The adoption of an EU strategy for Central Asia is an important step towards strengthening EU policy in the region," noted the Latvian Foreign Minister. Both sides were of the same opinion that such crucial issues as energy and water supply should be considered in a regional perspective.
During the conversation the ministers examined co-operation projects that have been successfully implemented in the past, for instance, experience exchange between veterinary services and co-operation in the banking sector, and expressed a wish to advance collaboration in other areas as well in the future. Minister Riekstins noted that the work of the Republic of Latvia-Kyrgyz Republic Intergovernmental Commission and the Latvian-Kyrgyz business forum demonstrate a mutual interest in strengthening relations and attracting investment.
