Latvian Ambassador presents Letter of Credence to Egyptian President
On 16 June, Maris Selga, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia presented his Letter of Credence to President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The accreditation of Ambassador Selga is a significant step in strengthening the relations between Latvia and Egypt, as well as another impulse to develop Latvia's contacts with the Arab world.
The Latvian Embassy in Cairo is to be officially opened in the second half of 2008. It will be the first Embassy of Latvia in Africa.
This representation was unofficially opened on 15 January 2007. Ambassador Selga took up office in Egypt in March this year. To date, Latvia was represented in Egypt by non-resident Ambassador Andris Vilcans, who resides in Kiev, Ukraine.
On 26 June in Riga, political consultations between the Egyptian and Latvian foreign ministries will be held, at which the sides are expected to examine bilateral relations and to outline their co-operation in nearer and further future. The consultations will also cover current regional and global issues.
