Experts from Advisory Committee of Framework Convention for Protection of National Minorities visit Latvia

09 Jun 2008

Between 9 – 13 June, experts from the Advisory Committee of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities will stay on a working visit in Latvia, with the aim of acquainting themselves with the implementation in Latvia of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.

During the visit, the experts will meet with representatives from various public administration institutions, non-governmental organisations and the media. Their schedule also includes meetings with representatives from some of the Saeima commissions, a visit to the Ombudsman's Office and the Constitutional Court, as well as a visit to Daugavpils.

The Advisory Committee has been established for the monitoring of the implementation of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities through reviewing reports submitted by countries. Latvia's State Report on the fulfilment of the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on 3 October 2006.

It should be reiterated that on 26 May 2005, the Saeima ratified the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, and this instrument entered into force in Latvia on 1 October 2005.
