On 28 August, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins received Ambassador of Russia to Latvia, Alexander Veshniakov, at his request of the latter. In the course of the meeting, Ambassador Veshniakov presented the official position regarding the recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Maris Riekstins emphasised that in accordance with the United Nation's Charter, with documents of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and with the UN Security Council resolutions, acceded to also by Russia, the territories in question are constituent parts of Georgia. Foreign Minister also noted that Russia's decision to recognise the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia will not facilitate stability and the settlement of the situation in the region.

Minister Riekstins indicated that contrary to what Russia had promised, Russian troops are still present in Georgia, and called for their withdrawal. Mr Riekstins also reiterated the need to reach an agreement on the enhancement of international presence in the conflict zones.
