As part of American Latvian Association project Sveika, Latvija! (Hello, Latvia!), a group of young American and Canadian Latvians together with friendship classes from Sabile and Lizums secondary schools visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 26 August.

During their visit, the participants of the project Sveika, Latvija! met with Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins, who told them about his experience of working at the Latvian Embassy in the U.S., debated with the group about the Latvian foreign service and topical events in international politics, and also answered questions about the daily routine and responsibilities of a minister.

The group also met with Ivars Lasis, the Ministry Press Secretary, who described the Foreign Ministry and the specific features of the work of a diplomat. The visitors also had the opportunity to view the restored building of the Ministry in the company of Vita Timermane-Moora, Head of the Public Relations Division.

The participants of the project are young people, 13 to 15 years old. They are of Latvian origin, but were born and grew up in the U.S. or Canada. Participants of Sveika, Latvija! come from New Jersey, Seattle, Montreal, Toronto, and other cities. The group is visiting Latvia for two weeks. They will spend this time exploring Latvian regions, going to museums, and meeting well-known people. The American Latvian Association organises similar trips annually, with the aim of bringing Latvian youth of North America into contact with Latvian mentality, as well as the culture and traditions of their fatherland, thus strengthening their national affiliation.
