Foreign Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Eriks Zunda and State Secretary Normans Penke met with Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Quan during the Latvian and Chinese foreign ministry political consultations on 7 September.
During the conversation with Parliamentary Secretary Eriks Zunda, representatives of the Chinese delegation were introduced to the principles of work organisation of the Latvian Saeima MPs. Eriks Zunda noted that the Chinese Co-operation Group is the largest parliamentary group in Saeima.
Normans Penke mentioned that the political consultations were being held on a symbolic date. The 7th of September is exactly the date when China as one of the first states of the world recognised the re-established independence of Latvia in 1991. Both sides recognised the friendly atmosphere of mutual understanding currently present in bilateral relations between Latvia and China. On noting the frequency of visit exchange, Normans Penke mentioned the present visit by Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis to China.
Kong Quan complimented the rapid economic development of Latvia and expressed high regard for Latvia as a prospective co-operation partner having notable potential in the field of transport.
The sides discussed the current events in EU-China co-operation, including trade issues, preparation for the 10th EU-China summit, and problems of international security and regional policy. An agreement was reached on the necessity to extend the consultation mechanism between both foreign ministries, introducing consultations at the level of foreign ministry departments.
