President of European Commission congratulates Latvia and Russia on signing of border treaty

 

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, in today's broadcast of Europe by Satellite, welcomed the signing of the Latvia-Russia Border Treaty, noting that:

"I congratulate the governments of Latvia and Russia on the signing of the border agreement between the two countries. I am convinced that this is a decisive step in achieving stable relations between both countries, and that it will promote co-operation between the EU and Russia in such areas of mutual interest as border administration and cross-border initiatives, freight transit and illegal migration".

The European Commission expressed hope that the Parliaments of the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Federation will speedily ratify the Treaty.
