EU High Representative Javier Solana welcomes signing of Latvia-Russia Border Treaty

The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), Javier Solana, has issued a statement, expressing his appreciation at the signing of the Latvia-Russia Border Treaty.

"It is important for the EU to have legal certainty regarding its Eastern border and this agreement contributes to this. It will provide a stable basis for relations between both countries and will facilitate EU-Russia co-operation in important areas such as border management and the fight against illegal immigration."

Mr Solana expressed the hope that the Border Treaty will be ratified by the Latvian and Russian parliaments as soon as possible.
