Foreign Minister: "Latvia's representation will become centre of Latvian culture"
On 5 March 2007, Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks participated in a ceremonial event dedicated to the beginning of renovation works at the new building of Latvia's Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. The Foreign Minister expressed the hope that the renovated building will not only be home for the representation but that it will also become the centre of Latvian culture.
Minister Pabriks noted that the building was bought in 2005, and a number of seminars, events, and lectures have already been held there.
The renovation works will be done by SIA Skonto buve. The vice-president of the company, Ivars Millers, presented the construction plan to those present at the event. Minister Pabriks expressed hope that a successful co-operation would be established with SIA Skonto buve, which is also performing renovation works at the Foreign Ministry's historical building at Valdemara street in Riga.
Construction work at the building in Brussels is due to be finished by August of this year, and the total cost of works will amount to 3.8 million lats. The building will become the workplace for staff members of Latvia's Representation to the European Union and for the Consul of the Latvian Embassy in Belgium.
