Foreign Ministry's Informative report on Latvian presidency of Baltic Council of Ministers approved [30 Jan 2007]

On 30 January 2007, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the informative report On Latvia's Presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2007 prepared by the Foreign Ministry and providing an overview of the priorities highlighted by Latvia and the significant activities planned during its presidency.

During the presidency, a closer co-operation among the Baltic states will be implemented in the spheres of energy, transport, interior affairs, environment and defence. In foreign policy the focus will be on the co-operation of the Baltic states within the framework of EU Neighbourhood Policy.

The Latvian presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers will allow Latvia to assume the leading role in facilitating the implementation of the common interests and goals of the Baltic states in sectors of importance for the development of the countries, and will provide opportunities for Latvia to put forward new initiatives.

On 1 January 2007, Latvia took over the BCM Presidency from Lithuania. The term of the Latvian presidency will be for one year.
