Artis Pabriks discusses energy policy in the Baltic states with the Lithuanian Foreign Minister
On 5 January 2007, Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks met with the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Petras Vaitekunas, in Palanga, Lithuania, to discus issues pertaining to the independence of the Baltic states regarding the issue of energy supply.
At the meeting, the ministers discussed building of Ignalina nuclear power station, construction of Dobele gas storages, and research and management of energy resources in the Baltic Sea shelf.
Minister Pabriks reiterated that Latvia is interested in the building of a new nuclear power station in Lithuania as it would provide the Baltic states with a safe and reliable energy production after the closing of the present Ignalina nuclear station. He also expressed the opinion that the decision to invite additional partners is up to the companies themselves.
The ministers also discussed cross-border co-operation. The first commission meeting is scheduled for the near future in which representatives of central and local governments of both countries will participate to discuss the local problems on the Latvian-Lithuanian border and to find common solutions.
The ministers also discussed joint scientific projects, development of the Baltic Forum, the Latvian presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers, and current EU issues.
