Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks encourages cinematographers, in collaboration with experts in Latvian history, to shoot feature films and documentaries in which events in Latvia's history would be reflected objectively and clearly.
"These works should, in a perceptible way, explain the most complex pages of our history that are often perceived in a simplistic way or even wrongly. We ourselves should take care to explain our history, to prevent others doing it in a way that is advantageous for them. It is unacceptable that subjective and biased works about Latvian history created abroad, very often dominate not only in international media, but also the Latvian media. Government institutions, cinematographers and historians should join forces to change the situation", considers the Foreign Minister.
Minister Pabriks is convinced that video materials could also be used for educational purposes by schools. They could also help diplomats abroad describe our country's political system, economic development, history and traditions.
The Foreign Minister acknowledges that both the Latvian Foreign Ministry and the Latvian Institute are prepared to participate in the production of films and in their distribution to foreign media.
He envisages that suitable film projects could qualify for government funding next year.
