On 14 February 2005 in Tiran, Albania, the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Italy, Janis Lusis, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Albania, Alfred Moisiu, to officially become Non-Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to Albania. Mr Janis Lusis is the first Latvia's ambassador to Albania resident in Rome. During the visit, the Ambassador had several meetings in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliament of Albania. The country's officials congratulated Latvia with its joining the EU and NATO and stressed that at the present phase of its development, Albania is looking forward to assistance, especially from the EU and its member states. At the meetings, the achievements of Latvia and the other Baltic States were affirmed to be a wonderful example for Albanians, and Latvia's experience of integration into the EU and NATO was considered very useful. The officials discussed the further cooperation between Albania and Latvia and the prospective mutual exchange of visits at the level of governments and parliaments, and pointed to the development of a contractual basis as the necessary precondition for developing bilateral relations. | |||||
