On 5 September in New York City, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Andrejs Pildegovičs presented his credentials to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.
At the meeting, the officials discussed recent international developments and the involvement of Latvia in the organisation’s work. Andrejs Pildegovičs pledged Latvia’s support for multilateral diplomacy, in which the UN presents a platform for seeking global solutions to global problems. The Ambassador expressed support for priorities in the UN Secretary-General’s work: conflict prevention, fostering sustainable development, and the UN reform. Andrejs Pildegovičs underlined that Latvia strongly advocated respect for international law and democratic values. He called on the Secretary-General to facilitate the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and not to lose sight of the frozen conflicts in Nagorno- Karabakh, Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The UN Secretary-General highly appreciated Latvia’s current active involvement in the UN and other international organisations and assured the Ambassador of his intention to take the successful cooperation forward.
At the end of the meeting, Andrejs Pildegovičs informed the Secretary-General about the events held to celebrate Latvia’s centennial and invited António Guterres to visit Latvia.
