On 26 July 2018, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Cyprus, Māris Klišāns, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades.
In a conversation at the President’s palace after the ceremony of presenting credentials, the Ambassador praised the friendly relationship between Latvia and Cyprus, as well as close cooperation in the EU, the UN and other international organizations. Māris Klišāns acknowledged his intentions to intensify cooperation in economy, trade, and tourism. Both parties showed interest in organizing bilateral visits in due course. Those would be at the level of State officials, members of parliament, and experts from various sectors.
During the conversation, the President addressed Cyprus unification stating that there are hopes to resume negotiations. Nikos Anastasiades invited Latvia to support Cyprus in its unification negotiations in accordance with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions.
In addition to his accreditation, Ambassador Māris Klišāns had meetings with Nikos Christodulidis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats from the European Union Member States, the Ambassador of Ukraine Borys Humeniuk, Dean of the diplomatic corps in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, as well as representatives of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and entrepreneurs.
Ambassador Klišāns resides in Athens where he performs the duties of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to the Hellenic Republic.
