On 16 May 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, together with the Foreign Ministers of the other Baltic States, met with the US President Donald J. Trump’s Assistant for National Security Affairs, John R. Bolton. The officials shared views on the issues of security policy and transatlantic cooperation.
In the discussion, Edgars Rinkēvičs thanked the United States for its support due to which Latvia’s defence capabilities had been able to develop more rapidly. At the same time, the Minister asserted that it was essential to set up joint long-term programmes for the further development of defence capabilities.
Minister Rinkēvičs emphasised that Latvia was interested in a persistent US military presence in the Baltic States and Poland. He also voiced hope that the US contribution to transatlantic security was going to increase.
Edgars Rinkēvičs stressed the need to work on a practical plan to implement the declaration of the US-Baltic Presidents’ Summit that was adopted by the leaders of the four countries in Washington DC on 3 April.
