On 24 April 2018 in New York, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovičs, took part in the High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace organized by Miroslav Lajčák, President of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his remarks, Andrejs Pildegovičs drew attention to the need for strengthening UN contribution to conflict prevention through investment in addressing their root causes, since the resolution of protracted conflicts proves more costly for the international community in political and economic terms and has a destructive impact on socially vulnerable communities in particular.
As he noted the importance of economic development, good governance, education and women’s empowerment for the stability and sustainable growth of crisis-affected regions, Andrejs Pildegovičs emphasised that development policy should be a basic component of preventive measures. In this context, the State Secretary informed the audience about support provided by Latvia and experience shared with countries in Europe’s neighbourhood, Central Asia and the Western Balkans.
Andrejs Pildegovičs pledged Latvia’s continued support for Ukraine and Georgia by sending its experts to special monitoring missions of the OSCE and the EU. As a member of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, Latvia will pursue its contribution to the efforts of fighting international terrorism through sending military instructors and supporting reconstruction projects in Iraq. The State Secretary highlighted in particular the role of the UN peacekeeping operations and briefed those present about Latvia’s contribution to the UN operation in Mali – MINUSMA.
As part of his visit on 24 April, Andrejs Pildegovičs also took part in a discussion organised by the Foreign Minister of Georgian, Mikheil Janelidze, on achieving sustainable peace based on human rights. The State Secretary underlined Latvia’s support for the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia).
