Latvia to support the modernisation of the EU-Chile Association Agreement

On 9 and 10 April 2018, State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovičs was on a working visit to Chile, where in political consultations with the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Alfonso Silva, he discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations. The Latvian side called for the conclusion of a Convention on the elimination of double taxation and tax evasion and an Intergovernmental Agreement on cooperation in education and science. The draft agreements were presented to the Chilean side. In anticipation of the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Latvia and Chile in 2021, Alfonso Silva suggested that celebrations be organised in both countries.

During the consultation, the Secretaries of State also discussed current developments in international politics and issues of high importance for the two regions. Latvia supported the conclusion of a modernised European Union (EU) - Chile Association Agreement.

Latvia and Chile has good co-operation in the field of higher education. During negotiations with representatives from the education sector of Chile – Vice-Minister of Education, the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics and the Director of the CONICYT, the Education and Science Agency of Chile – opportunities were discussed for increasing the number of student exchanges, promoting joint academic projects and short-term traineeships at science and research institutes.

During his visit, State Secretary Pildegovičs also met with Ambassador Stella Zervoudaki, Head of the EU Delegation in Chile, and Paola Amadei, Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation. Andrejs Pildegovičs expressed thanks for the excellent organisation of the ICT business mission and the EU-LAC Foundation’s contribution to the development of cooperation between the Baltic and Latin American countries. Paola Amadei highly appreciated the level of preparedness and activity of the Latvian business delegation and invited Latvia to submit proposals for the EU-LAC Foundation’s operational programme next year.

Andrejs Pildegovičs also met with representatives of the Latvian diaspora living in Chile.

On 12 and 13 April, the programme of the ICT business mission continues in Costa Rica. State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovičs is heading the Latvian delegation on the business mission of the Baltic States ICT sector in Latin America – Chile and Costa Rica.
