On 15-16 February, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs will take part in an informal meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union (EU), or the so-called Gymnich, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Foreign Ministers will share opinions on current developments in Syria. A discussion is also planned on North Korea in relation to its recent tests of ballistic missiles and nuclear tests, as well as North Korea’s talks with the representatives of the South Korean government during the Winter Olympics.
A separate working session will deal with progress achieved in the integration of the Western Balkans countries with the EU, based on the European Commission’s Strategy for the Western Balkans published on 6 February. The Gymnich meetings traditionally include a joint session of EU foreign ministers with foreign ministers from EU candidate countries, dedicated this time to cooperation in defence and security.
