On 10 November, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Andrejs Pildegovičs, met with the Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Erlan Abdyldaev, for a discussion on bilateral relations between Latvia and Kyrgyzstan, cooperation between the European Union and Central Asia as well as current regional developments.
The officials were unanimous that the potential of bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Kyrgyzstan has not been fully exploited. Andrejs Pildegovičs pointed out that he sees opportunities for broader cooperation in economy, education, fostering the rule of law and fighting corruption. Latvia has gathered vast experience in the matters of border demarcation and delimitation, which could be useful for Kyrgyzstan. Latvia can also offer support in the development of a system for standardisation and certification of agricultural products. Erlan Abdyldaev expressed interest in cooperation in the information technology and e-governance sector.
Andrejs Pildegovičs congratulated Kyrgyzstan on the successful holding of presidential elections on 5 October. The European Union, including Latvia, welcome Kyrgyzstan’s efforts of strengthening democratic institutions. Latvia will continue providing support and share its reform experience with Kyrgyzstan, for instance in the field of the rule of law.
State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovičs is visiting Uzbekistan to take part in a conference entitled “Central Asia: Shared Past and Common Future, Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Mutual Prosperity”.
