From 8 to 9 November, Riga hosted the third consultations between the Political Directors of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Baltic States and Israel. The parties highly appreciated the quadrilateral cooperation format, which, besides the good bilateral relations, expands prospects for cooperation between the countries. Those aspects are of special significance this year, when the Baltic States and Israel mark the 25th anniversary since the establishment of their diplomatic relations.
The consultations addressed relationship between the European Union and Israel, regional and security issues in the Middle East and the Baltic region, and cooperation in international organisations. Attention was also devoted to strategic communications, and Jānis Sārts, Head of the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence had been invited to join in a discussion on those matters.
The Israeli side proposed to host the next political consultation in 2018 against the backdrop of celebrating 70 years since Israel was declared an independent state and the 100th anniversary of the Baltic States.
The talks were led by Andris Pelšs for Latvia, Paul Teesalu for Estonia, Alon Ushpiz for Israel and Asta Skaisgiryte for Lithuania.
The previous consultations took place on 2 November 2016 in Jerusalem.
