The position of Latvia on developments in Spain, in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia

02.10.2017. 13:35

The position of the Latvian government on the issue of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia remains unchanged: this is an internal affair of Spain, to be resolved in conformity with the Spanish law and Constitution.

We note with regret the cases of violence that were reported, and we hope that a solution will be achieved through the Spanish political and constitutional process.

We would like to emphasise that violence is not an appropriate method to be applied in a political process. At the same time, we call on the parties involved to exercise restraint, observing commensurate attitude and proportionality in their actions.

Spain and Latvia enjoy close bilateral relations; Spain is Latvia’s ally in the European Union and NATO, and other international organisations. It is a country which respects democracy and the rule of law and brings an invaluable contribution to protecting EU values worldwide. In light of this, the situation must be resolved in compliance with the relevant legislation of the Member State and of the EU.
