On 11 September, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, the Speaker of the Knesset of the State of Israel, who has arrived in Latvia for a visit.
At the meeting, the officials discussed bilateral relations between Latvia and Israel, underlining the importance of a regular political dialogue and visits, as well as their intention to expand business cooperation. Edgars Rinkēvičs noted that the celebration of Latvia’s centennial next year also offers opportunities for expanding cooperation in culture. Yuli-Yoel Edelstein underscored the friendly relations between both countries and the potential for building an even closer, practical cooperation in the areas of mutual interest both to Latvia and Israel, for instance, on cyber security issues.
The parties also shared views on current developments in the Middle East and the state of affairs in the Middle East Peace Process. Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed support for a two-state solution to be achieved through mutual negotiations and in the interests of both parties.
As part of his visit, the Knesset Speaker met with the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis, the Speaker of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament), Ināra Mūrniece, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, Gundars Daudze, the Chairman of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee, Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, and members of the committee. Yuli-Yoel Edelstein also visited the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia and took part in a commemorative event at the Holocaust Memorial in Rumbula.
