On 17 July, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs took part in the meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

In a current discussion on the implementation of the EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy, Edgars Rinkēvičs emphasised the importance of building EU capabilities in strategic communication and called for strengthening the independence of the media in the EU’s neighbourhood. Given the increase in disinformation targeting the EU and its Member States, adequate resources should be mobilised to support the work of the East StratCom Task Force, said the Foreign Minister.

At the same time, Edgars Rinkēvičs also called for moving ahead with the work on the strengthening of cooperation in security and defence, including with Central Asia and transatlantic partners. It is vital to build closer cooperation not only with the United States of America but also with Canada, said the Foreign Minister. This should be promoted not only by political leverage but also through ratification of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) by all EU Member States, Edgars Rinkēvičs stressed.
